teaching Black students.

Today,
when I opened my class
for announcements,
my students erupted
in a birthday song
for one Black girl.

They sang it
traditional style.
Then, they sang
the Stevie Wonder version.

And, just for a moment,
I felt
like I was in a movie
and it was so Black
and they were the story
and they were the reason
and I was the witness.
Wow.
